Following an almost straight course across the formerly unenclosed land of the Great Common of Blackmore, the instance here of a ‘shire’ name suggests a deliberately ‘made’ section of the county boundary, a suggestion complemented by the fact that to this day it serves as a routeway – indeed, quite a busy road.
