Risk Statement

The activities of our Research Group are organised informally, and by joining in any of our outdoor events you do so entirely at your own risk, and we accept no liability for those who participate. If you wish to join us you are reminded that you must rely on your own ability and experience to gauge the difficulty and severity of the activity and the route or terrain involved, and you will be responsible for your own safety at all times. Any decision to continue or discontinue any walk or activity at any point is entirely your own choice, and you are reminded that you should have appropriate clothing, rainwear and footwear, and carry sun protection, food and drink adequate for the weather and the duration of the walk or excursion.

Kingsettle Wood. This Dorset - Wiltshire boundary is recorded 5ft RH (Wilts side) on an 1886 survey. The hedge would appear to have aligned with the large and split trees to left.

RG will ‘chair’ the morning. Led by KB, GH, AM and RW.

Do join us all with our maps and pencils; comments, observations and suggestions warmly welcomed.

And a light pub lunch afterwards

03 Apr Kingsettle Wood 10.00 for
10.30am

A field meeting to Kingsettle Wood along our Dorset/Wiltshire border west of the Shire Rack. RW has kindly forwarded the HRF map for the length we walked back in 2015. This field meeting is one prompted by the interest expressed by the Kingsettle Woodland Trust organiser and volunteers who contacted Claire Pinder on hearing about the DCB Research project.

They are keen to learn about our recording methodology and our discoveries; and - as RW observes - there remains considerable further potential here for further discoveries before the summer undergrowth ‘gets going.’ Led by RW.

Biddlesgate

10.00 for
10.30am
As many DCB ‘members’ are well aware, the Dorset county boundary traverses the designated area of the CC AONB from just east of Shaftesbury to the ridge south of Biddlesgate – a length with includes that of Bokerley Dyke. Further to ‘following up’ matters-Shire Rack, KB suggests we hold a field meeting along the length south of the Dyke and invite AONB ‘members’ to join us in an exercise to take forward further recording/conservation/way-marking of another chartered/historic length; the potential for the archaeological investigation here of Mears Pond already noted. Ringwood/Damerham along our eastern Wiltshire/Hampshire border, an exploration of the bounds of the AD 961 charter in which King Edgar granted 22 hides of land at Rimecuda¸ ‘Ringwood’ to Abingdon Abbey. A place-name which may itself be read as OE rima wuda ‘border wood.’ This is a field meeting ‘held over’ from last year (see above) - do join us. Led by AM. TBA TBA
02 Oct Bradford Abbas 10.00 for
10.30am
Bradford Abbas along the banks of the River Yeo overlooking Somerset. This estate was granted by King Athelstan to the familia of the Sherborne minster by the charter of AD 933 – with a boundary survey. This is yet another Sherborne episcopal estate along the Dorset/Somerset border. This field meeting was also held over from last year – being ‘replaced’ by the postponed – rained-off - meeting to ‘Shaftesbury East.’ Led by KB. TBA TBA
