Shaftesbury

Wincombe Business Park.

Field Visit - reconvened from 4 April

Wednesday 1 August, - 10.00 for 10.30am
Location: Wincombe Business Park, ST 869243 - post code SP7 9QJ. The Business Park is located on the east side of the A350 just north of Shaftesbury.

Occupying a spectacular hilltop site, Shaftesbury is another of those shire ‘border boroughs’ as presented by Christchurch, Lyme Regis, Yeovil and Milborne Port. Listed in the 10c Burghal Hidage (along with Wareham and Bridport) Shaftesbury was a defensible, strategic site; King Cnut died here in 1035. In AD 888 Alfred founded and endowed a Nunnery and by 1086 Shaftesbury Abbey was a major landowner (estates located on the Dorset side of the border – including 6d Handley the northern edge of which follows the Shire Rack). Domesday Book records major damage to Shaftesbury following the Norman Conquest; In burgo Sceptesburie 38 of the 66 houses had been destructae and In parte abbassiae 42 of the 111 houses omino destructae ‘utterly destroyed.’

From the edge of the Wincombe Business Park, the Dorset/Wiltshire boundary follows a more-or-less north/south course just east of Shaftesbury. This is a thought-provoking length (and area) in those relations between borough and shire and presents a lost length which cuts across, seemingly to ‘ignore’ the later field enclosure of this formerly open tract of land; ‘Heathland’ is a name which still presents in this area. Lengths of today’s public footpath which we will be using follow a substantial field boundary bank betraying former coppicing and supporting large veteran tree stools – almost to suggest that it was this which formed a now lost, earlier length. And the OS records two bound stones which invite ‘re-discovery.’ There are plans to create a Shaftesbury bypass linking the A30 and the A350 and which will cross this area. GH has kindly already undertaken some useful research here and we look forward to sharing this and to learning more about an area which has clearly seen changes – and which continue to the present day. Do join us for yet another thought-provoking – and different – length of our Dorset border.

We will walk as far as Mampitts Farm where there is yet further housing development taking place in this area east of Shaftesbury. (Suggested here is OE malm ‘sandy or chalky soil’ – Shaftesbury is sited on a Greensand ridge above the Chalk). From here we will be re-tracing our steps back to the Business Park to collect our cars.

Wash-up

For our post-meeting ‘wash up’ session, suggest the Kings Arms on the northern edge of Shaftesbury. Driving back along the A350 over the round-about towards the town centre, on the left hand side of the road the words KINGS ARMS appear on the side of a large building just in front of which is the entrance to a large Pay and Display carpark. The Kings Arms will be very pleased to see us - are open all day – and there is plenty of room in which to sit down.

The Kings Arms is situated in the lovely town of Shaftesbury in Dorset. The lovely old building is eye-catching and the traditional interior is definitely worth a look at, with timber beams and a large open fire
